The village was to be used for street fighting practice by American troops, in preparation for the D-Day Landings. Although Imber's residents were told that they could return to the village within 6 months, and despite repeated protest, the village stayed in MOD hands, and its residents were never allowed to return. Now for a few days a year, members of the public are permitted to visit the village. It's a strange sight. Visitors drive along a road lined with signs warning of the danger of unexploded ordinances, should they stray onto the grass. Wrecked tanks, now used for target practice, litter the hillside. The Somerset Quarrying Company began working in Vallis Vale around 1893, and by 1898 was operating four faces with 40 men. Of the 100 tons per day produced, 90% went out as roadstone. The remainder was burnt in two nearby kilns to produce lime for use in agriculture and in water softening and sewage treatment. The stone for roadmaking was collected by a series of 2'3” gauge tramways and delivered to a processing works at Hapsford Mill. The stone breakers were particularly interesting in being largely water powered, by waterwheels from a former saw mill. By 1907, the company had six working areas at Vallis. Within a further twenty years, the number of quarries in this small area had doubled, so that apart from small breaks between individual openings, workings along the valley sides were almost continuous. As time progressed, more and more geological and logistical difficulties were encountered. A high proportion of hard chert (silica) in the Black Rock Limestone in the southernmost quarries near Egford had caused machinery to wear much more quickly. On the west side of the valley, workings were advancing towards the Great Elm–Frome Road and the railway system was becoming difficult to maintain. The depressed market for stone in the early 1930s put great pressure on the industry. While these houses could be constructed quickly and relatively cheaply, they aged badly, suffering from cracking and deterioration of concrete. The difficulty in gaining a mortgage on a house type considered 'defective' accounts for their lack of popularity with buyers, while the large gardens they were built with has appealed to developers, keen to build houses at a higher density.
